Nordic Day at the Family History Library

The Family History Library and the Research Specialists at the Nordic reference Team are hosting a free Nordic seminar on Saturday, January 9th, 2021

Their classes are as follows:

9:00 AM MST; How to Use the Swedish National Archive Website, Riksarkivet – The Swedish National Archives is one of the oldest authorities in Sweden with origins back to the 1200s. Much of the collections were destroyed in the fire of 1697. The provincial archives began in 1899 with Riksarkivet as the governing authority. Today all the provincial archives and the military archive (Krigsarkivet) are part of Riksarkivet. Their collections are vast, including many searchable databases. Come discover how to use the Riksarkivet website for your genealogy!

10:15 AM MST; How to Find People in the Norsk Slektshistorisk Forening (The Norwegian Genealogical Society) – Here we will learn how to access early records for Norway. Some are about ministers from as early as 1535, including where and when they served. These include the areas that used to belong to Norway but are now in Sweden. We will also touch upon some other early families from Norway.

12:30 PM MST; Figuring out Denmark Jurisdictions – Jurisdictions can be complicated in any country, but they are especially so in Denmark. This class will teach you how to figure out which jurisdictions or estate your ancestor belonged to so you can find their records.

1:45 PM MST; ArkivDigital Basics – This class will discuss how to use the subscription website, ArkivDigital to find your Swedish ancestors. It will include instruction on using helpful indexes, finding church records, probates, and more.

3:00 PM MST; Nordic Paleography: Understanding Common Abbreviations and Symbols – We often see abbreviations and symbols in the Swedish records. What do they mean and how do they shed light on the lives of our ancestors? Learn how to interpret commonly used abbreviations and symbols, as well as where to look when those abbreviations aren't quite as common.

Use the link below to register. You will get one zoom link that will take you to all the classes and you can choose which of the classes, one, two, or all, you would like to attend.
